It's not just April 13th! It's not just Friday the 13th! It's GAME NIGHT on FRIDAY the 13TH @ the CLAIBORNE'S!!!!

We'll supply the pizza and the drinks, you supply yourself and if you can, bring a snack!

You can also invite a friend! The more the merrier ... it will be interesting to see just how many can fit into our small living room. Kinda like how many clowns can fit inside a Volkswagen Bug.... scratch that if you're scared of clowns. Or VW Bugs for that matter. The point is...that it won't be the same without you so come on over!

Today Dale spoke on the family tradition we have in the Claiborne house to read the story of Jesus’ birth right after we eat our Christmas Eve Taco’s and right before all the grandkids dive under the tree for their presents.

It begins by Dale’s dad, Ken, getting out the Bible and turning to Luke 2. Typically a couple grandkids gather around him or on his lap as he reads aloud while the rest of us take a seat to listen. It is quiet and beautiful. It is the story of how Christmas came to be.

Dale also spoke about the Christmas tree and how incidentally that Jesus’ birth, life, and death all included wood from a tree.

Luke 2:7
…She wrapped him snugly in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger…

The manger, a trough, made of wood.
His earthly Father, Joseph, was a carpenter and taught Jesus the trade.
Jesus died on a rugged cross.

A Christmas tree is a holiday tradition for most whether they believe in Christ or not but Jesus is represented by that tree. Christ illuminates in the darkest of places to show the way to His Father.

Thanksgiving Classic: Thankful For The Thorns

Sandra felt as low as the heels of her Birkenstocks when she pulled open the florist shop door, against a November gust of wind. Her life had been as sweet as a spring breeze and then, in the fourth month of her second pregnancy, a "minor" automobile accident stole her joy. This was Thanksgiving week and the time she should have delivered their infant son. She grieved over their loss. Troubles had multiplied. Her husband's company "threatened" to transfer his job to a new location.

Her sister had called to say that she could not come for her long awaited holiday visit. What's worse, Sandra's friend suggested that Sandra's grief was a God-given path to maturity that would allow her to empathize with others who suffer. "She has no idea what I'm feeling," thought Sandra with a shudder. "Thanksgiving? Thankful for what?" she wondered. "For a careless driver whose truck was hardly scratched when he rear-ended her? For an airbag that saved her life, but took her child's?"

"Good afternoon, can I help you?" Sandra was startled by the approach of the shop clerk. "I.... I need an arrangement," stammered Sandra. "For Thanksgiving? Do you want the beautiful but ordinary, or would you like to challenge the day with a customer favorite I call the 'Thanksgiving Special'? I'm convinced that flowers tell stories," she continued. "Are you looking for something that conveys 'gratitude' this Thanksgiving?" "Not exactly!" Sandra blurted out. "In the last five months, everything that could go wrong has gone wrong." Sandra regretted her outburst, and was surprised when the clerk said, "I have the perfect arrangement for you."

Then the bell on the door rang, and the clerk greeted the new customer, "Hi, Barbara...let me get your order." She excused herself and walked back to a small workroom, then quickly reappeared, carrying an arrangement of greenery, bows, and what appeared to be long-stemmed thorny roses. Except the ends of the rose stems were neatly snipped: there were no flowers. "Do you want these in a box?" asked the clerk. Sandra watched for the customer's response. Was this a joke? Who would want rose stems with no flowers! She waited for laughter, but neither woman laughed. "Yes, please," Barbara replied with an appreciative smile. "You'd think after three years of getting the special, I wouldn't be so moved by its significance, but I can feel it right here, all over again." She said, as she gently tapped her chest.

Sandra stammered, "Ah, that lady just left with, uh.... she left with no flowers!" "That's right, said the clerk. "I cut off the flowers. That's the 'Special'. I call it the Thanksgiving Thorns Bouquet." "Oh, come on! You can't tell me someone is willing to pay for that!" exclaimed Sandra. "Barbara came into the shop three years ago, feeling much as you do, today," explained the clerk. "She thought she had very little to be thankful for. She had just lost her father to cancer; the family business was failing; her son had gotten into drugs; and she was facing major surgery."

"That same year I had lost my husband," continued the clerk. "For the first time in my life, I had to spend the holidays alone. I had no children, no husband, no family nearby, and too much debt to allow any travel." "So what did you do?" asked Sandra. "I learned to be thankful for thorns," answered the clerk quietly. "I've always thanked God for the good things in my life and I NEVER questioned Him why those GOOD things happened to me, but when the bad stuff hit, I cried out, "WHY? WHY Me?!" It took time for me to learn that the dark times are important to our faith! I have always enjoyed the 'flowers' of my life, but it took the thorns to show me the beauty of God's comfort! You know, the Bible says that God comforts us when we're afflicted, and from His consolation we learn to comfort others."

Sandra sucked in her breath, as she thought about the thought that her friend had tried to tell her. "I guess the truth is, I don't want comfort. I've lost a baby and I'm angry with God."

Just then someone else walked in the shop. "Hey, Phil!" the clerk greeted the balding, rotund man. "My wife sent me in to get our usual Thanksgiving arrangement... twelve thorny, long-stemmed stems!" laughed Phil as the clerk handed him a tissue wrapped arrangement from the refrigerator. "Those are for your wife?" asked Sandra incredulously. "Do you mind telling me why she wants a bouquet that looks like that?"

"No... I'm glad you asked," Phil replied. "Four years ago, my wife and I nearly divorced. After forty years, we were in a real mess, but with the Lord's grace and guidance, we trudged through problem after problem. The Lord rescued our marriage. Jenny, here (the clerk) told me she kept a vase of rose stems to remind her of what she had learned from "thorny" times. That was good enough for me. I took home some of those stems. My wife and I decided to label each one for a specific "problem" and give thanks for what that problem taught us." As Phil paid the clerk, he said to Sandra, "I highly recommend the Special!"

"I don't know if I can be thankful for the thorns in my life." Sandra said to the clerk. "It's all too... fresh." "Well," the clerk replied carefully, "my experience has shown me that the thorns make the roses more precious. We treasure God's providential care more during trouble than at any other time. Remember that it was a crown of thorns that Jesus wore so we might know His love. Don't resent the thorns." Tears rolled down Sandra's cheeks. For the first time since the accident, she loosened her grip on her resentment. "I'll take those twelve long-stemmed thorns, please," she managed to choke out. "I hoped you would," said the clerk gently. "I'll have them ready in a minute."

"Thank you. What do I owe you?" "Nothing. Nothing but a promise to allow God to heal your heart. The first year's arrangement is always on me." The clerk smiled and handed a card to Sandra. "I'll attach this card to your arrangement, but maybe you would like to read it first."

It read: My God, I have never thanked You for my thorns. I have thanked You a thousand times for my roses, but never once for my thorns. Teach me the glory of the cross I bear; teach me the value of my thorns. Show me that I have climbed closer to You along the path of pain. Show me that, through my tears, the colors of Your rainbow look much more brilliant." Praise Him for the roses; thank Him for the thorns.

Say a little prayer for me

That you, God, would bless us indeed!

In 2000 Bruce Wilkinson wrote a book entitled, "The Prayer of Jebez", which became an international bestseller. I remember this because our church at the time, New Life Center in Bakersfied, went through it and many wonderful things happened during this study.

This is by no means a formula for prayer but it is an example of God granting our prayers. I (Angela) was reminded of this little prayer today during my quiet time and I began to pray this prayer for Connection Church, Dale and I, as well as the many Christ-centered Churches in San Luis Obispo. I believe that God has a strategy to pour down His Spirit in this little city and expand our territory! Are you ready? I am!!!

1 Chronicles 4:10 (New King James Version) And Jabez called on the God of Israel saying, "Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I many not cause pain!" So God granted him what he requested.

This little prayer is stuck between a lot of names in the Bible and then all of a sudden the writer jots down a little note about Jabez. I've read this many times and just skipped right on by it but thanks to Mr. Wilkinson he put a spotlight on it and I'm so glad he did. In this one scripture, this one prayer, Jabez is asking for a blessing, expanded influence, protection, and covering!

"Lord Jesus let Your will be done at Connection Church and in San Luis Obispo. Prepare us all for the wonderful blessing, influence, protection, and covering that You will bring. Amen."

DNA-There is so much talk of dna over the last few years, CSI everywhere is taking over television, I mean CSI Oceano is a bit much don't ya think! Anyways on to the point, i just watched a movie with my daughter on a daddy daughter date. We saw the movie "flicka" and it's about a teenage girls struggle with her father, who are exactly alike. The horse is just the means by which the conflict is played out. Good movie, even better message, but a rental not a full price movie.

I have been re-reading (audiobook) Wild at Heart, a book about guys being guys. My wife has recently read and taught at a womans retreat from the book Captivating. a book about women being women.

Here's the point about DNA. We are made a certain way, as a man I am made for the adventure of life. I love good old western movies with days on the trail and the good guys and bad guys and the cows and the horses and the snakes and bears and coyotte's, buffalo, campfires and beans, you get the point. That appeals to me, why? Because when I was a kid the coolest game to play was cowboys and indians.Why, not because it put people in a good and bad catagory but because it was wild and dirty and an adventure.

Our DNA comes from God ultimately and I wondered about God and if he likes the adventure, and then it hits me the book calls it Free Will. Gods ultimate adventure, free will! We get to chose how we allow God to be God or if we even do! And here's the cool thiing God like's to show up and save the day! Crossing the Red Sea, or the fiery furnace or the calming of the sea's ring any bells. God like's to show up and save the day!

As I am preparing for my first 3 day hike since I was in my early, early twenties I am realizing the wildness of this creation, even when I hike Bishops and look out into the vastness of my own surroundings I see the wild and the adventure and something tempts me to quit my job and go and build a log cabin somewhere.

I know that this is primarily about a mans perspective but the point is this: What is in our DNA is supposed to be there and we try too hard to make a man more sensitive and woman less sensitive. But this is what we are supposed to be, Song of Solomon likens a man to all things rough and rugged, a young stag a tree, and a woman to all things elegant and fragile, words like honey and pomegranites and fawn.

I know you are saying this is 2006 man, men are supposed to be more sensitive and women are just as strong and powerful as men. Are we? I am not saying that women stay at home and cook and clean and have kids and that's it! I am also not saying that men must work and then come home and do nothing to around the house.

What I am saying is this: Women are still looking for prince charming who will sweep her off of her feet and be able to romance her and still fight the bears and lions when necessary, and Men are looking to fight the bears and lions and still sweep a woman off her feet.

I know that ther is alot unsaid, but I fear that the length of this discussion could deter people from reading so here is the question:

What is the thing that makes you most feel like a man or a woman?

Plan B: The Summer Concert Series continues for the month of August, but not in the park. The little Claiborne house becomes the Cathedral of Coolness for the second half of summer. Of course, it was totally cool to start with. It's at 263 Cerro Romouldo—parallel to Foothill on the right leaving town. (See the Map and Schedule page for more detailed directions.) We'll have coffee and either donuts or something healthy just like always, maybe both, except now you'll find everything in the kitchen where it belongs. Please join us. Someday you'll be able to tell an unbelieving crowd (make that an unbelieving crowd of believers) that you actually attended services in the Claiborne living room back in 2006. Can you believe it?

First Letter from Camp

Our very own Molly Stites, who just completed her freshman year at Cal Poly, accepted a summer job in New Hampshire (The State that's too great to abbreviate.) She has a wonderful part-time job in San Luis Obispo, so she was really afraid to tell her boss here about the New Hampshire summer job. As it turned out, he not only understood, he was excited for her, and he's keeping her job open for the fall.

Here's some of her first email"

NH is so beautiful. Okay, most of the people here have an accent. Americans are in the minority. I am now a certified lifeguard. I'm becoming good friends with a girl from Ireland. There are tons of people from Australia, and they REALLY do say g'day mate! There are people here from Russia, South America, England, and people from all over the United States. Lots from Canada, they're teaching me French. Yesterday, all the boys were here for lifeguard training. We decided to play a game, and I said, "Oh yeah, let's play touch football." But, more people knew how to play rugby than football, so that's what we ended up playing. We're just cleaning the camp and making new friends at this stage, so I'm LOVING it. the plane ride was beautiful. There was no one in my row, so I got to sleep, and there ended up being someone at the airport to pick me up as soon as I got off the plane. Anyway, love you and miss you!!!

First & Foremost

We've had a lot of firsts this year. Since this is the first year for Connection Church in San Luis Obispo, or anywhere else for that matter, it seems like just about everything we do is somehow for the first time. This Sunday, for example, was our first Baptism Service, our first service at Avila Beach, our first service with Pastor Angela not in attendance—she had a long-standing commitment to speak at a women's retreat this weekend—the first time Pastor Dale delivered his talk sitting on an ice chest, the first time we took a break not just for coffee, but for fish-n-chips (Ryan had to be late, so we sort of had lunch while we waited), and the first time we saw clearly just how much Pastor Dale values warm and dry. It was truly an uplifting event, though from the photograph above you can see not everyone shared our enthusiasm.

We prayed before they went out, but whatever Dale intended to say before Ryan went under, he must have said really fast, because one moment they were up, and the next they were both down. It was almost as if someone else had a hand in the baptism, and wasn't going to settle for just one.

Your Summertime Mission, Should You Choose To Accept It

Hey, it's summertime, or about to be, and there's one thing I wish for you this summer. Here it is: Waste time! That's right, waste time. Waste time on yourself and your family. Break your routine. Get out and do something different. Climb Bishops Peak or Madonna Mountain, go kayaking in Morro Bay, read a good book. But, whatever you do, do something you don't normally do.

Remember, vacation comes from the word "vacate." So, do that. Vacation from your problems. (Sorry. Couldn't resist the What about Bob? reference.) But, seriously, take a vacation and relax. Replenish your soul, your body, your mind, and your spirit. Get away from the routine. Waste time with God.

I have a friend who wrote a book called Why Not Waste Time With God?. Pretty clever, yet so profound. While you're vacationing, He just might show up. Look for Him on the mountain top, and be sure to tell Him what a beautiful place He's created. Look for Him at the ocean while your playing with the seals and the otters, and think about the wild things He's created. Look for Him, He's all around. He'll show up in your soul and in your spirit, if you just open the door.

Here's another suggestion: Consider keeping a journal to write down what you think He's saying to you in your summer endeavors.

I guess the point is, Waste time!

Ecclesiastes says there's a time for finals and a time for fun—or something like that. So, we came up with the nothing-too-serious, kick-back-and-have-fun Game Night at the Claiborne house, Wednesday, May 31st from 7:00–11:00 PM. It's a come one, come all event. If you're a Cal Poly student, this will likely be the calm before the storm, because the following week is the dreaded Week of Finals. Even the sound of it makes your skin crawl.

That's where the fun part comes in. Remember, all work and no play is why Jack and Jill ran up the hill in the first place. You can't be ready for finals unless you've taken a few moments off to relax and get in touch with yourself. If you're not a college student, you can still relax, enjoy the fun, get in touch with yourself, and go right on relaxing the following week. Everyone is invited.

Expect Texas Hold-em and other card games, board games, made-up games, prizes lots of good food, (mostly junk food, but don't tell anyone,) and lots and lots of fun. Bring a friend. Bring someone you don't know. Bring a game. Bring yourself.

We're really proud of our efforts to help students in San Luis Obispo. Next year we'll have our own Cuesta College student at home, so it's something we think about quite often. The Student Survival Kits that we gave away last quarter were a big hit, and we expect this batch to be even better. Putting them together has turned out to be a lot of fun, and maybe just a little nerve-wracking at times, but it's helped us to relate better to student life, a big issue here in SLO, and we hope it's helped students to relate better to us.

We'll be giving them away May 28 & June 4 at our regular services. Tell your friends about them. We've made a lot more this time, and the stuff we've found so far is really great. So, help if you can, grab one if you need one, and tell a friend.

We all know someone who has been touched by cancer. There are so many of us who are concerned about this disease and want to make a difference. The American Cancer Society's Relay For Life is a great way to take a stand against cancer. That's why I've started a relay team to participate in the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, and I'd love for you to join me.

An incredible tribute to cancer survivors and caregivers is scheduled to kick off the event, and a moving ceremony that will honor local members of the community who have courageously fought the disease. I can say without hesitation that Relay for Life is truly unlike anything else you will ever do.

The local event takes place June 24–25 at the San Luis Obispo High School track. We'll have our regular church service right there at 10:00 AM Sunday after walking the track and camping out the night before. [It turnes out there won't be room for us to have a service, or time, but please join us at the track and lend your support to the closing ceremonies. You'll be glad you did.] Please be a part of this great event. Join the relay, lend a hand, give moral support, whatever you can, but take a stand against cancer.

As Roseanne Rosanna-Dana might have complained in the early days of Saturday Night Live, "What's all this fuss about Others Day? I mean, does it make any sense? Think about it. A day when you celebrate everyone but yourself? I mean, who thought of such a... What? Mothers Day? Oh... Never mind."

Anyway, this Sunday is Mothers Day, and Pastor Dale has a card or two up his sleeve, but they're probably not from Hallmark. When you care enough to send the very best, what do you send? Number three in the Cheezy Slogans series might have a surprising answer or two.

The first Cheezy Slogan was a big success. Well, the slogan itself wasn't the big success. The slogan was Tastes Great, Less Filling. But the talk was a hit. Anyway, you get the idea. Pastor Dale broke it down into legalism vs. lawlessness. Then he broke us down into discussion groups to see if we could come up with interpretations of our own. There were lots of interesting ideas shared.

The next slogan has something to do with Volvos, old Volvos really, and that cheezy slogan they used to use. So, what's the connection between Volvos and Christianity? or Volvos and non-Christianity? At this point, only Pastor Dale knows. You'll just have to come this Sunday to find out.

The Volvo in the picture is called Ole Maroon and comes from Zac and Jeremy's old Volvos page available here. It was found via Google Images, crumpled fender and all.

Update on the First Week-After-Easter BBQ

A great big thank you to the Hearron's Home Group in Bakersfield who contributed all the tri-tip and hot dogs. What a blessing that was. And a great big thank you to our very own Aaron Janssen, grill master extraordinaire, who came hours early and cooked everything to perfection. If it weren't for Aaron, we'd still be throwing matches on top of the charcoal. And a thank you as well to all those who pitched in to help serve and clean up afterwards.

A big success!

We fed some homeless people, some passers-by, a bunch from the immigration rally who were protesting on the other side of the park, and who later marched around town making quite a ruckus, a few skateboarders who sort of rolled in, hungry college students — ever notice how college students are always up for food? — and, of course, the gathered congregation. Pastor Dale broke us up into discussion groups after his talk, and the talking continued all the way through lunch.

Remember in the movie Patton where the general orders a chaplain to pray for good weather, and when good weather prevails, he has him transferred to his personal staff? Well, the weather was dark and threatening almost everywhere between 10:00 and 12:30 except Mitchell Park. Our pastor had to put on dark glasses to give his talk, and almost everyone pealed off their jackets and sweaters because they were starting to overheat.

If we did this every week we'd be more popular than Jesus. (Just kidding. That was the stupid remark that got the Beatles in so much trouble. Remember?) But, if we only did it every so often, we'd sure keep Cowboy Cookies in business.

Speaking of homeless people, Pastor Angela used this occasion to announce that Connection Church raised more than $800 to contribute to the Maxine Lewis Memorial Homeless Shelter in San Luis Obispo, much more than anyone expected. They say that bad news comes in threes. Well, good news, good weather, good food, good times, and good people know no limits.

A big thanks to everyone.

For the uninitiated, that's Jock Talk and Chic Chat.

CC What a great time we had. We got to smell things, try them on, play with colors, watch and laugh. Nine women with very different takes on make-up attended Chic Chat night, and for an hour or so, we all got to enjoy just being a girl. Afterwards, we discussed how we perceive others, and how others perceive us. To my surprise, the discussion turned to friendships, and how some come along for a reason, a season or a lifetime. We decided they all come along for a reason, and with lessons to be learned. I think we all realized that we are striving to be the women God created us to be, and, unless I am mistaken, we were all happy to be traveling on this part of our journey together.

JT Florida vs. California. Six California fans huddled in the Claiborne living room. One Florida fan (me) arrived late, thinking the game would be over. To my delight, I was winning. So, before I got booed out of the TV area, I retreated to the bedroom, flipping between Seinfeld and the game. I could hear them through the walls at times, and I know they heard me once or twice. Needless to say, the guys had a great time eating and hanging out, but there were no whoops and hollers at the end, except by me. If the guys want to write their own review, they're free to do so, but I think this about sums it up.

BIBLE NOTES

John 4:1-3

Jesus has this uncanny knack of not letting any drama get to him. How much are we like that? Here we have the Pharisees starting a competition between Jesus and John the Baptist, saying things like, your numbers of baptisms are increasing while John's are decreasing. What does Jesus do? He leaves town. Maybe this is a lesson to all of us. When we start to compare our lives to others, our ministries to those of others, we should just stop and get out of town for a while. For me, I will not compete for the crown of largest or the best church. I would rather have a small, real ministry that effects people's lives and promotes life changes in a community no matter what the size.

John 4:4-32

These are my thoughts about the story of the woman at the well. The woman was there at noontime. Water was usually drawn twice a day — once in the early morning and once in the early evening. So, here we have a woman at a well at noon. What does that say about the woman? I wonder. We find out she wasn't exactly the most morally sound woman on the planet, being divorced five times and living with another man who was not her husband. This poses another question. Here's Jesus alone at the same well with a woman — a Samaritan woman — in the middle of the day, and he asks her for a drink of water.

Here's the question I have for myself and anyone else who cares to join in. Jesus wasn't PC (politically correct) so, why do we feel like we have to be? He wasn't concerned about his image, or about traditions,or what people might think, he just responded to the situation. So why do we feel like we have to be so politically correct, or so cautious about what we say and do? I understand not offending people, but I also understand defending my beliefs. I don't argue about them much, or take big dramatic stands. The truth is, I'm not much of a fighter these days.

So, the question is, why as Christians do we feel like everything is a fight — from prayer in the schools to Christ in Christmas? Is it because we want everything our way? Prayer in school: a Christian might say, "You can only pray to God, the Christian God." I still think we should have prayer in school, but I think that we should pray to whatever God we serve. But, pray!

I'll stop here, for now, and try to get part two up in a week or so. But, I'd really be interested to hear your thoughts on the subject.

First Communion

We've had a lot of firsts so far this year. Last Sunday was the first communion service. It was also Palm Sunday. And, we met for the first time at the Ludwick Community Center. The series on the Parables ("Story Tellers") continued with "Fahgedaboudit," which is mob talk for the all-purpose "forget about it," pronounced in a sort of Sopranos TV Italian. Needless to say, Pastor Dale had us in stitches. Better in stitches than cement shoes, if you get my drift. Another first was the indoor basketball court. Did you know that Ryan drives around with a basketball in the front seat of his truck, just in case? Did anyone notice how warmed up and ready for worship some of the guys were? It was also the first time we had cabaret style seating. It worked out really well, because Communion, after all, is a reenactment of the Last Supper.

Next up is Easter at the Vet's Hall, with a full band and special give-a-ways. Service at the normal hour. Don't miss it.

A Walk on the Farmer's Side

Ever wonder what it feels like to be on the farmer's side of Farmers Market? April 13th is your chance to find out. Last time we handed out 400 bottles of water in what seemed like a blur. Asking price for court side seats at Monday's basketball final are topping $2,700 on the Internet. The Girls' Game

And we're not talking about some women's division of the NCAA. We're talking about Connecting to God and to Others through our God-given beauty, outwardly and inwardly. That's the theme for this Tuesday's Chic Chat in the same living room as the guys, and no, we will not have to clean up after them. We'll have a Jafra Products presentation (no obligation) with something for everyone. Call ahead if you can, because dinner is included (6:15–7:00). The demonstration is from 7:00–8:00, followed by dessert and discussion led by Pastor Angela. Yes, you can drop by just for dessert.

Remember that old saying, "Spring forward, Fall back?" Well, guess what? It's not Fall any more. This Saturday, if you go to bed early, set your clock forward an hour. If you like to put things off until the last minute, then you can stay up till 2:00 AM Sunday, when the time officially changes to 3:00 AM. Can anyone guess why they do it that way? Anyway, if you forget the clock, but remember church, you should be getting there just in time to help put things away! Everyone has an embarrassing story, so don't even pretend you've never forgotten.

For some of us, our first year in the SLO lane is now in its final stages. If you're a student at Cal Poly, unless you're staying on for summer school, you've just started your last quarter of the year . If you're a senior pastor like me — I've been pastoring here for 6 months now — then you're really at the stage of leaving one life behind and truly discovering another. It seems like some people's lives never change, they live in the same place, do the same things, while others go through one change after another. So, I just have to ask this question:

How is your life different than you expected it to be?

For me, well, by now I thought we'd be a larger congregation than we are. However, I never expected it to be as effective and as fun as it has been. Nor did I expect the new relationships that have formed to develop quite like they have. I love my new friends, and furthermore, they love me, and I know it.

At my last ministry position I found myself stuck in a vicious cycle. I had one hundred twenty-five volunteers, and twelve ministry plans (yearly goals) to meet. I was working 50 hours a week and trying to be a father, a husband and a pastor. I will try with all of my might never to return to that lifestyle. I learned a lot about management, and I am grateful, but I also learned that the proper perspective is that my job enables me to live, not my life enables me to work. I love this town of San Luis Obispo, and every day I become more and more a part of the SLO life. In short, I dig it.

If you missed church this week, then you missed something really difficult to describe. There is nothing in the photograph of Lydia Ranger that belies the power, the brightness and the range of the voice she brought to San Luis Obispo this weekend. She could easily fill an arena, and apparently has done so on numerous occasions. She is an equally gifted speaker with a heartfelt manner impossible to resist. We were truly graced by her presence.

Farmers Market

This is a picture of the Sparkletts Man. He will not be at the Farmers Market this week — well, not that we know of — but we will. We're going to give out 400 bottles of water, if everything works out, some of them Sparkletts, all of them with invitations attached for our Easter service and planned BBQ the following week. If the weather continues like it has, there might be a few bottles of ice handed out. At least our heart's in the right place. We'd love you to drop by and visit. Maybe, hand out a few bottles and feel warm inside. Sort of a mid-week smilefest. We've done it before (in warmer weather, of course) and had nothing but fun. The New Life Center in Bakersfield, CA is a vibrant congregation — over two thousand strong and growing — that was the training place and home church for our own Pastors Dale and Angela. Lydia, a pastor herself, is the wife of James Ranger, the primary pastor at NLC. They have served as an inspirational team there for the past seventeen years. Her gifts are many. She is both a noted recording artist and concert singer, as well as a widely recognized speaker. She has a beaming personality, as you can probably see from her photograph, and has had the unusual distinction of singing the National Anthem at the start of a Lakers game. A question we might all ask her when she comes is: Did they win that night? Those who know her already are looking forward with great anticipation to hearing here speak — and sing? Don't just hear about it, hear it yourself. Be there March 12th, the second Sunday of the Month, and bring a friend. You'll be glad you did.

What It's All About

Some people believe that the King James version of the Bible represents the way God speaks, and a certain percentage of those people actually believe that God only speaks English. My guess is that God speaks all languages, or else he could never answer the prayers lifted up to him in so-called "foreign languages." The question is not what language God speaks, but what language you speak. If the King James sounds like Shakespeare to you, well, there's a good reason. It was first printed in 1611. The English language has changed a lot since then. The original languages were Greek and Hebrew — not the Greek and Hebrew spoken today, of course. There's also some Aramaic and traces of other languages in the Hebrew. To make things more complicated, Saint Jerome translated the Bible into Latin, and the Latin was translated into all kinds of languages, including English, by people who knew no Greek or Hebrew. You could spend your whole life studying the implications of all this, and some Biblical scholars have done just that. Fortunately, the Bible is so important that scholars have made new translations from the originals for generation after generation, and present-day translators have taken into consideration every imaginable type of reader.

On the back table at our church services there is usually a small stack of paperback Bibles. The ones pictured are a really handy sized New International Version (NIV) that is tremendously popular today. It tends to be very accurate, word for word. It's not exactly everyday language, but it's written in everyday words, if that makes sense. The Bibles on the back table are there for anyone who needs one. We're not publishers or booksellers. We're not fishing for contributions. What we do ask, though, is that you give God's Word a chance. It's not as easy as television. On the other hand, it's not rocket science, either. It takes time, but the time you spend will last you a lifetime. It's a case of eating your cake and having it too. Some of the Bible's truths are instantaneous. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. There it is. Period. Others take time. Jesus died for your sins. It sounds so simple, but what does it really mean? And, finally, what does it mean for you? The Bible's a good place to find both questions and answers. The Bible is just a book, but it's also the Word of God. And that's what it's all about.

It was lost, but now it's found

In my spare time I'm working on the series Story Tellers that is set to begin on the 19th of March — it's about the Parables. I meant to hand this out today. It goes with the first part of RPMs: Recognizing Potential Mates. Today's talk had to do with selecting a mate. We talked about the special smell that new cars have, about how great they look in the almost irresistible glitter of the showroom. But, we also talked about how soon the newness wears off. We tied it to the sad realities of the divorce rate, and talked about children growing up in single parent families. Selecting a mate is not about makes and model numbers, or tans and perfumes. We need to ask ourselves some serious questions before we sign on the dotted line:

Fruit of the Spirit

Love — Is this a loving person? Does he or she sacrificially love me?

Joy — Does this person have an exuberant spirit like the one that lives in a man or woman of faith?

Peace — Does this person have peace with God through Christ? Is this a person who is anxious and worried all the time, or do you sense a calming nature?

Patience — Is this a person who is able to delay gratification? Is there discipline in how finances and money are handled? Is he or she patient, or demanding?

Kindness — Is this person truly kind? Whatever you do, pick someone who is kind.

Goodness — Do you sense that this person basically good? Does he or she have strong morals, and stand up for what's right?

Faithfulness — This is the mark of a true believer. Find someone who will always be there for you, who is consistent and honest. Ask yourself, is this person faithful, or flaky?

Gentleness — Is this person cold and macho, or warm and sensitive to your needs?

Self-Control — Does this person control his or her speech? Does he or she have control of the sex drive, or is it always about going off road & jumping in the back seat?

Peak Experience

The girls may be getting together for Chick Chat Movie Night earlier in the week, but the guys have their own plans: Jock Talk Walk. On the 26th at 2:00 PM — that's after church, and after lunch, of course — I'll be leading the guys up Bishop Peak for some male bonding and outdoor exercise. Mark it down on your calendar and don't forget, because it's going to be fun. No, I won't be taking my guitar. It's the highest peak in the chain of ancient volcanos known as The Nine Sisters, or sometimes The Morros. (Morro Rock is one of the sisters.) The padres at the old mission gave it the name Bishop Peak because if you look at it from just the right angle it looks like a bishop's hat. I realize this is almost a month away, but it's not too early to start marking your calendar and making plans. Thursday, February 23 is Movie Night with Angela. It's a Girls Only event starting at 7:00 PM, and will be held at the Claiborne house. (263 Cerro Romauldo Ave. — See the map on the welcome page for directions.) I promise to have lots of goodies, a great flick, and lots of good stuff to chat about. So, bring a friend, as long as it's not a boyfriend, and expect to enjoy yourself. That's February 23 at 7:00 PM. Don't forget.

Meltdown

If you're reading this page, it means you're probably really good at bookmarking. We've suffered a meltdown at the main server, which means that the main site is not working at all. This is the Blogger page. Thank God for Blogger. We should have the domain and the server linked up again in two or three days, and working top notch a day or two after that. So, don't panic. We'll do that for you. Obviously, we're working on it. Many of the graphics have been moved over to Flickr temporarily, but only the most recent ones. Nothing will be lost. All those smiling faces will be back to greet you very soon.

This is probably a good time to reflect on how uncertain life can be, and how important it is to value every wonderful moment. Fortunately, we have a backup plan for the site. How's your backup plan?

Super Bowl Sunday

By now, everyone has a Super Bowl Sunday tradition of some sort. It usually involves something bubbly, something barbecued and a bunch of stuff that crunches when you munch. If you're not a football fan, this is not the time of year to explain to your friends and neighbors that it's just a game, because it's not just a game, it's the Super Bowl.

This year begins a new tradition in San Luis Obispo, with Pastor Dale sending in the plays. We're not sure what to call it, exactly, but we're thinking of Super Bowl Teamwork Sunday to emphasize the planned talk on Teamwork. We were also thinking about Super Give-A-Way Sunday (Get it? Giving a way to others, and giving away prizes?) to emphasize a fun feature that is still under wraps for Sunday. You can't expect us to give away the whole game plan before the big game, can you?

Anyway, you won't miss a thing by attending church this weekend. You might even take a few things home. Wear your hats and jerseys if you want to, but no betting, no fighting, and no name-calling during the service. Remember, life is more than just a game, but if you're going to play, play to win. (1 Corinthians 9:24) See you Sunday.

Coming and going

Pastor Angela, pictured here with her lovely niece, gave a heartfelt talk this Sunday on Love and Forgiveness. "If God can forgive us, then we really must forgive ourselves." She talked about our "thought-life," and how it is really for many of us the enemy within. The terrible memories we keep within can be quite harmful. One of the great secrets of happiness is to transform those memories into something beneficial. We must sometimes force ourselves to find something good that came about because of our haunting experiences, no matter how terrible they seem on the surface. That something, usually just out of sight, is by its nature redemptive.

Then, she brought the house down, and dried a few tears with her misreading of Jesus' words, "Go now, and return to your life of sin." "Wait a minute," she said, "isn't there supposed to be a not in there somewhere?" The word was leave, and so we did, each and every one of us with a big smile.

If you've looked at the website this week on a PC, then you've probably noticed that things aren't where they normally are. Some sort of bug crawled into the site, one that only affects PCs. As you read this, Evan's trying to exterminate it. It's not catching, so don't worry about that, and nothing's missing. It just doesn't display right. If praying to help kill a bug sounds unchristian, remember, it's not really a bug, just a misplaced computer digit.

John 3:2

Nicodemus calls Jesus Teacher. Then, he says, We all know that God has sent you to teach us. Your miraculous signs are proof that God is with you.

Nicodemus calls Jesus Teacher, yet he was a religious leader himself, a teacher of the sorts as well. But Nicodemus was a searcher and his searcher instinct appears to be greater than his teacher instinct. He was searching for something more than what he had as a leader of the Pharisee's. He needed to examine Jesus for himself.

They say that it's good to know what other religious theologies are about, and I agree — to a point. I think it's more important for me to know what I believe and why I believe it. Just a thought, what do you think?

Jesus then explains what being born again is all about.

John 3:5

Jesus said, The truth is, no one can enter into the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit.

To me this means it's free. Birth cost me nothing. My birth into this world was free of charge to me. It cost my mother (the pain of childbirth — and, oh yeah, I broke my elbow, mom) and my father (stitches from catching the house on fire) plus many other costs of raising a very curious boy. But to me, the cost was nothing, nada, zilch. The cost of birth by Spirit, however, was Jesus' very own life, his entire earthly existence. For me, that doesn't sound fair, but it's true. A free gift for all to receive and to apply.

Have you ever pursued one of those free gifts online? You know, the one that costs you a magazine subscription, a foreign language course and a credit card application. The importance of this scripture is that it can't be earned. No amount of do-gooding — "my own merit" — volunteering, missionary work, giving in the offering, is going to save my soul. I just receive it and apply it to my life. That's it.

John 3:8

This is the U2 verse. Jeus says, Just as you can hear the wind but can't tell where it comes from or where it is going, so you can't explain how people are born of the Spirit.

Jesus says the spirit moves in Mysterious ways. Thus, the U2 reference. The thing about the Spirit of God is that it's unexplainable. When we say yes to Jesus, something in our spirit changes. For some it's a rapid fire thing. For others, it's a slow burn that takes a while to digest and soak in, but it's mysterious nonetheless.

John 3:9-10

This is a great exchange that basically says, Knowledge is great and respectable and should be pursued. However, it won't get you into the kingdom. I think this is something very relevant for our culture, and should be remembered.

John 3:13-15

Jesus talks of his own death: The Son of Man, must be lifted up on a pole so that everyone who believes in me will have eternal life.

Jesus is referring to the time when the children of Israel were attacked by poisonous snakes. God told Moses to put a snake on a pole and raise it up. Those that looked at it would be saved. So, Jesus on the cross became our remedy for the poison of the world that keeps us out of heaven. Pretty cool when you think about it. The international sign for medicine and help is an Old Testament prophecy of Jesus' death.

John 3:16

This brings us to the most famous scripture in the world, the end zone scripture. John 3:16. Everyone together now, For God so loved the world, the He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him, should not perish but have everlasting life. I still love the King James Version of that scripture. It sounds so poetic and has so much impact with words like whosoever. It's all-inclusive. No one's left out. Believe. That's it. Believe Jesus died for you. Accept the free gift. No judgement. No condemnation. Just love.

John 3:18-20

Jesus doesn't judge. Our own actions do that. Our actions show our undoneness. Let me reference that word undone. In the Book of Isaiah (6:5), Isaiah says My destruction is sealed. In the King James Version it says, woe is me for I am undone. Isaiah gets a glimpse of the throne room of God and sees how holy He is. He looks at himself and realizes that he is nothing, destroyed, undone by the holiness of God. Notice how in both of these passages there is no judgement by Jesus, no condemnation by God, just the fact of their holiness and us being undone, destroyed by our own self. My own actions, my own thoughts or ignorance, my own unbelief, distrust, my own self destroys and judges me, not God. In Him there is only love.

John 3:22

Again, in this study we see Jesus chilling out. Maybe this is a theme to life: Chill out, relax a bit after you do something.

John 3:23-30

John the Baptist was baptizing people and people began telling him that Jesus was baptizing in another location, and John says something I need to apply more to my own life.

I quote from the New Living Testament (NLT) He must become greater and greater, and I must become less and less. How true. Jesus must become greater and greater in our lives, and we must become smaller and smaller. That's so easy in some areas of life, but in others, it's sometimes a huge challenge. I struggle with giving God control of all areas of my life, and I am not a big control freak. Another thing I notice is that John never says, I must become something else, he just says, I need to be a smaller version of my self. Maybe more transparent is the word. He does not imply not being John the Baptist. He implies not being JOHN THE BAPTIST. The idea is: We must become little Dales [you can insert your name here instead of mine] and God must become a BIG GOD! BIG JESUS!

John 3:31-36

We conclude this chapter with John the Baptist paraphrasing what Jesus said to Nicodemus earlier in the chapter. He says things like my understanding is limited to the things of earth, referring to the mysterious movements of the Spirit of God. He goes on to say, All who believe in God's Son have eternal life. Sounds a lot like John 3:16.

John understood. He got it. Jesus is the gift of eternal life, and his role was to point people to the cross.

Prayer: Abba, God, thank you for Your unfailing love, and for the end zone. You defined what it means to score a touchdown in the Kingdom of Heaven. Thank you for the gift of your Son. Amen.

If you wish to receive Jesus, it's really simple. Just say this little prayer: Jesus, I recognize you as my Savior. Forgive me of my wrongs and come into my life. Give me strength as I start my journey with you. Amen.

Close Your Eyes

...and imagine the most beautiful Sunday morning possible. OK, forget that trip to Hawaii. Now, imagine the most beautiful Sunday morning possible on the Central Coast, take away ten of fifteen degrees, and there it is: this Sunday's first outdoor service. The rains didn't come late like some of us prayed for, they came early. A whole day early. They washed away the dust, watered all the plants, and left a circle of rain-dark mountains, puffs of white clouds, and a couple of beaming pastors who seem to have had the inside word on this one.

Pastor Dale played his acoustic guitar. Those who knew the lyrics sang with a kind of outdoor abandon. Those who didn't hummed with great enthusiasm. Angela served Starbucks coffee in cardboard jugs that kept the fingers and insides warm. It was quite an experience, and will not soon be forgotten.

As promised, Dale's talk led to a kind of outdoor discussion / Bible study that centered on prejudice and preconceived notions. Everyone got to share personal opinions and experiences. If the rest of the world had been there, the service would have been very long, but we'd also have a lot fewer problems.

John 2:1-11

Jesus turns water into wine.

His second miracle!? (Ha, ha. For those of you who remember the sermon a few weeks ago, his first miracle was getting three wise men to ask for directions.)

I've wondered forever why Jesus did this miracle first — a wedding, water into wine. Then it hit me, and what hit me was what the emcee at the wedding says after tasting the new wine. Usually the host serves the best wine first, then, when everyone is full and doesn't care he brings out the less expensive wines. But you have kept the best until now. Why is this so significant? think about the setting and how Jesus likens the church to his bride. Then, think about the new wine. To me, it says — and this is just my opinion — that Jesus set the table for his entire ministry. The new wine and the new life is better than the old wine and the old life. So, life with Jesus is better than the life of the old ways.

John 2:12

Jesus chills in Capernaum with friends.

Why is this important?

Two things: Jesus often chills out after doing something extraordinary. Do I even chill out after my mundane lifestyle? I have never performed miracles, and I don't expect to, but I have done some pretty cool things that required all of my strength and attention for long periods of time, and I never chilled out after doing them at all. Does this speak to the idea effectiveness? Did Jesus teach us something about the course of life, and how to be effective?

The second thing I wonder is if Jesus knew what was coming next?

John 2:13-17

Jesus cleans his father's temple form the cheats.

He takes time to make a whip. I wonder, was he collecting himself? (Love is patient?) Then, he proceeds to clean house. Notice that Jesus does not chase them down the street. (Love is kind?) Jesus shows anger, yet does not sin.

I'm not sure if I'll ever be able to do that. I try, but it's tough. I heard that America is the angriest nation, and I'm sure I add to that noise.

Any thoughts?

John 2:18-22

Jesus talks about his death and resurrection when he says, Destroy this temple and in three days I'll rebuild it. Jesus knew his future and he embraced it. He did not ignore it. My thoughts are that it must be tough knowing that you are going to die, and knowing that no one truly understands the significance of it. He gives clue after clue, and no one gets it. Jesus was the Messiah, and he would die, conquer death and ascend into heaven. He tells us this early in his ministry. If the disciples had gotten it earlier, would things have been different?

John 2:25

The most intriguing scripture I've read in a long time.

No one needed to tell him about human nature.

Jesus gets it. He understands. He created us with this nature and yet he tells us, he gets it. Is this why he took time to make a whip? Was he feeling some kind of tension to really clean house, the street, the city and everyone, everywhere? I mean, he's God, and he could have done so, and been right by doing it. But, he took the time.

Maybe it was more than what was written?

Prayer: Jesus, thank you that you show us how to live, how to party and chill, and to be angry, yet not sin. Thank you that even though you knew your future, you went through with it. Thank you for getting it. Thank you for understanding what it's like to be human. You have our nature, even for ignorance, impatience, lack of control. Thanks God, your words are amazing. They keep showing us your ways and causing conversations like this one to start.

Playing with the Schedule

If you’re the kind of person who reads the church schedule of services every few days, then you’ve probably had a hard time keeping track of all the changes. Secular events, like birthdays and Super Bowls, have a way of changing the best laid plans once you remember which weekend they’re on.

The Super Bowl, which won’t be found in your Bible, is nonetheless a major, major event for sports fans, both here and around the world — though you might wonder if people in New Zealand or the south of France really know what’s going on when they watch it. So, it seemed appropriate for Pastor Dale to say something about sports and personal values on Super Bowl Sunday. He’ll be talking about “Teamwork,” something we could probably all be a lot better at. He’ll also be jotting down, “Remember the Super Bowl” on next year’s calendar.

Lane Claiborne, Pastor Dale’s football-playing son, turns sixteen the same weekend that Lydia Ranger was scheduled to be Guest Pastor. Jesus got three wise men to ask for directions, but he still hasn’t figured out how to get grown men to remember birthdays and anniversaries. So, rather than have Lydia drive all the way over from Bakersfield just to follow Dale and Angela back to Lane’s birthday party — she’d much rather spend the whole weekend here — she was rescheduled for March, and the March events pushed back a week.

Actually, it was a lot more complicated, but to keep from boring you with the details, we'll just ask you to imagine what the coaches must be going through right now.

Also, if you’re the kind of person who turns to The Weather Channel every few hours, then you know that a storm somewhere in the Pacific, really just a ripple of sorts, has been focusing with more and more certainty on this Sunday’s outdoor service at Santa Rosa Park. There were two ways to handle this one: change venue or pray. Please join us in praying for the rain to be just a few hours late.

BIBLE NOTES

As I mentioned in the last post, I am studying the Gospel of John for the start of this year and thought I would share my thoughts, observations and questions with you as I do so. These are more like off-the-cuff notes than messages. The great thing about the Bible is that you can read it over and over and still find something new every time. I know I'm not the only one who feels this way. And remember, you're always welcome to add your two cents in the comments section below.

John 1:1

John 1:1 shows us that what Jesus taught and what Jesus did were inseparable.

In the beginning the Word already existed. He was with God, and He was God.

Jesus could not teach what he could not do. What a great example for all of us to follow. So many of us say one thing and do another. We teach about drugs and alcohol, but fail to mention that we know where all the Starbucks are located. We talk about moderation, and yet, how is it we seem to know where all the best all-you-can-eat buffets are located?

John 1:6-9

John the Baptist, that "wild guy" in the wilderness, knew that he was preparing the way. He knew that he was pointing people toward Jesus. He prepared the way for them to see Jesus. The question is: Do I prepare the way for others to see Jesus, or do I just sort of say, "He's over there somewhere..."?

At Disneyland they have a policy that when someone asks for directions the workers are expected to point in the direction with two fingers and give explicit directions. So, like the curious guy I am, I asked directions for one of the attractions and, sure enough, two fingers and explicit directions. Why two fingers, and why so much emphasis on explicit directions? Again, curious guy that I am, I asked. The response was: Two fingers so as not to behave like a parent who is scolding a child, and explicit directions so no one gets lost and ends up with less than the Disneyland experience.

So the question is, and I suppose we should all ask ourselves this one: When people ask me about various pathways in life, do I give explicit, knowledgeable directions? And when I do answer, do I act somehow like a scolding parent?

John 1:14

The Word became human and lived here among us.

He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. Jesus became fully human and lived among us. He breathed the same air, ate the same food.

John 1:17

The middle part says: God's unfailing love and faithfulness came through Jesus Christ. Every action of Jesus was an expression of God's love for us.

Someday soon I'll compare 1 Corinthians 13 ("the love chapter") with this verse and try to show the overall characteristics of Jesus's love and actions. But for now, I'll just say that Jesus's life on earth was the perfect example of humanity — he was fully human. So, as I study the rest of John, and I hope you'll be reading along with me, I'm sure we'll find more of these attributes in the life of Christ, and as we do, I'll try to point them out, for my benefit as well as yours.

John 1:42-50

Last thought on this chapter...

Jesus starts calling his disciples, and what a ragtag bunch of guys to call, very ordinary and varied in their occupations and lifestyles. Does this suggest that the call of Jesus to follow him was to everyone? If so, then why is there a tendency to write people off before we even talk to them about Jesus? Oh, they're too rich or too smart, too poor. They'll never attend anyway. They're too far gone. They this, and they that. So, God, forgive me for saying no to people. That is not what you've asked me to do. You asked me to ask. Period. Some will say no, and that's very discouraging. Some will say yes, and that's always encouraging. And sometimes they'll say maybe. But ask. Don't answer for them.

Prayer: Jesus, thank you that you came and became the Truth for life. Help me to prepare the way for you. Help me to be small, so you can remain big. Help me not to tell, but to live a life that shows the way to you. Let me thank you for this life I live. It's amazing. God, thanks for giving us Jesus as a gift of your love for us. Lastly, thank you for calling ragtags and ragamuffins to be your servants. Give me grace, as I'm sure I fail you from time to time. Help me to live in your mercy, and in your grace, and to show your love. Maybe I can become your example of grace and mercy. I love you Abba, Father.

BIBLE NOTES

I'm hoping to do something different for the new year. As I take notes for my own personal Bible study, I thought I'd just share them on the blog more or less as they come to me. They won't be sermons or lectures. They may not always be right. There may be more questions than answers. But, I promise you, they will always be one man's efforts to understand God's Word.

Amie & Evan came up with the "dc!" logo. It's based on my email signature. When you see it at the top of a blog entry, you'll know that what follows represents things I've jotted down on my way through the Bible. Right now, I'm reading the Gospel of John for what seems like the very first time. I say that because I just keep finding things in it that I didn't realize were there. It's truly an amazing book.

I hope you'll join me. The nice thing about this electronic media thing is that we can all be together without having to squeeze into the Claiborne living room. You're welcome to comment, offer corrections, share your own views. The Bible can be very simple and yet very difficult. When you hear someone say, "Jesus loves you," well, it doesn't get more simple than that. But, if you're wondering how many gallons of water Jesus turned into wine, or what the connections are between 1John and John, it's always nice to have someone else offer suggestions, or to lend a hand in figuring things out.

Bounding into the New Year

This may be a little off the wall, but Amie Barnett took this picture in her back yard and thinks it would make a great design for a Rose Parade float — if the theme was frogs on rabbits, or toads on rabbits, not to split any hares. (Oooff!)

All this to remind you that New Year's Day at the Claiborne's house will be the site of a wonderful, praiseful New Year's Day Celebration with food, fun and friends. And it just wouldn't be the same without you.

Please drop by the house at 263 Cerro Romauldo Ave. — that's off Foothill near Patricia. You'll have plenty of time to wake up, because the party starts at 6:00 PM on January 1st.

The Last Shall Be the First

The last service of the year turned out to be the first rainy service, although at ten o'clock the clouds parted and the sunlight glittered in the trees and on the pavement leading up to the Monday Club just long enough to point people the way.

It was also the first Christmas service — not the last, we hope. Because Christmas falls on Sunday this year, and families, being so far apart, it seemed like a good idea to hold the service early this time.

And what a great service it was.

It was another of those great New Life Center reunions. Pastor Dale played rhythm. Sean Randall joined him on lead, playing a Fender Stratocaster a lot like the one Dale has. Maybe better? It has similar coloration, but sports a rosewood finger board. There's a little gleam in Sean's eye when he mentions it. Anyway, you can't buy either of them new anymore, which makes both of them kind of special.

Rod Armstrong took up bass — he's the one with the big smile in the photo. When he's not working the bass, he's a Parole Agent in Bakersfield. So, if you're on parole, be good.

And Dave Wolfekuehler (That's "wolf keeler" if you're reading this out loud.) kept the place hopping on drums. Come to think of it, Dave's got a pretty big smile himself. Dave can be found playing at Buck Owens' Crystal Palace when he's not guesting in San Luis.

If you noticed lots of kids in attendence, Sean brought his daughter Susannah, Rod brought his daughters Allysa and Rebecca, and Dave brought his son Jon (Chris couldn't make it) and his lovely daughter Alex. All we needed were some dogs and crying babies to feel completely at home.

Remember when pastors just carried a Bible to church? Welcome to the third millennium.

Looking back over the past months, it's been a wonderful start in San Luis Obispo — from 9/11 to the present. The week after New Years, we'll be back at the Monday Club. Check the schedule. We'd like to extend a warm thanks to all those who made it possible. God bless, and see you next year.

Awe and Wonder

How long has it been since you experienced the awe and wonder of God?

For me, it had been weeks since I felt any awe. Forget about wonder. The wonder I had was, "I wonder what I'm going to do today?"

Last Sunday morning I decided to drive down to Avila and walk the beach while I went through my message. It was early. The sun had not yet reached the top of the mountains, and the seals were playing in the surf. It was the kind of morning, crisp and clean, that is easier to experience than to describe.

I was pacing, reading through my notes, when I turned to the east and saw the first gleaming of the sun as it peeked over the mountains. The sky was filled with about a million different colors, and I was filled with awe and wonder again.

I get the idea that God smiled on me that crisp Sunday morning. I know He got my attention.

I'm curious. What fills you with awe and wonder?

First Fusion Night Report
Hey Connection Church this is Dale and I am so grateful for all of you who showed up at the very first "fusion" night. What a great time we had worshipping Jesus. I know from reports that God is doing some wonderful things in our church family. One account said they were singing the songs of the evening for the rest of the night. Imagine that, people worshipping away from church. I know I had a great time and I am looking forward to the next fusion which is in the planning phase right now.

Bring Your Bible
This weekend we need to bring our Bibles and get ready for a little group discussion on the Bible. I am giving away a really nice (so nice i want it for myself) Study Bible. I am stoked about this weekend.

Thanksgiving
Please let us know if you are coming to the house for Thanksgiving dinner. We are planning to have a pretty good spread for those who are staying in town. We will eat and play some games, or watch football or a movie, it will be a good time.

For a number of reasons, we are rethinking Connection Home Group, which is our version of Bible Study/Get-together. We had originally hoped to meet Tuesday nights. As it turns out, this isn't going to work. We're still learning the San Luis schedule, so to speak, and we don't want to over program things. Perhaps we'll come up with a periodic schedule that works for everyone. At this point, we're just not sure.

Home Group is still a great idea. It's made a big difference for a lot of people. So, please feel free to contact us about it. You can put your two cents in by commenting right here, or by going to the Contact section of the website.

Eventually, we'll figure it out. Keep your eyes on the blog for future dates and places. God bless.

This week's service was held at the Veterans Memorial Hall on Grand Avenue. What a great place to meet. It's big, it's friendly, it has great parking, and because of the yellow-hued curtains and bright stage lights everything ends up with a golden glow. It's almost like they were expecting us.

Molly Stites, 18, Cal Poly Freshman in Psychology, ran the PowerPoint presentation this week, and looked really good doing it. There's a lot more going on than just pushing next. In a perfect world it might be that easy, but when Pastor Dale decides to sing it "one more time," she has about half-a-second to figure out what that means, and when he skips a verse — Pastor Dale? — she somehow knows exactly where he is.

Scott Holman played drums this Sunday. At 14, he was easily the youngest person on stage. In Bakersfield he plays at the New Life Center. He also plays timpani (kettledrums) in high school and is looking forward to Jazz Band tryouts. When asked how long he's been playing drums, he says, "I don't know. Forever?"

Matt Thiede (pronounced "theedee") is a 17-year-old Physics major at Cal Poly. A good question to ask is: What were you doing at seventeen? Matt was the lead singer this Sunday, stepping back to let Pastor Dale sing a verse or two. He's smart AND talented. He might even be handsome. What do you think?

Armando Saenz has played bass since he was 16. At 35, he was ALMOST the oldest person on stage. (Gee, I wonder who that leaves?) He plays a black Musicman Sting Ray, for those who know about such things. He's normally a drummer, but played bass this Sunday to make room for Scott. About Scott, he says, "He has a good heart for praise, and is on his way to becoming an awesome drummer."

Both Scott and Armando made a special trip from Bakersfield to help out. They weren't alone. A special thanks to one and all. We are truly blessed. Hey, how about same time, same place next week!?

Or should we call it the Xterra Mobile Salvation Unit? Here we are parked in front of the San Luis Coastal Adult School on a beautiful Central Coast morning. The janitor did a great job setting up for us. He laid the groundwork, but Connection Church is a roving church for the time being, and the equipment doesn't carry itself. In addition to faith, it takes logistics and hard work. We heard no complaining.

Why are these people smiling?

Was it just the camera, or did the service have something to do with it?

You'll just have to drop by next week to find out.

Second Service

We hope to have photos soon. The second service went really well. We appreciate the love and support of our old friends, but we especially appreciate the new friends we are making daily. It's great to feel at home in San Luis Obispo.

The weekend before our first service we placed ads in the Tribune and the New Times to help get the word out. What struck us as funny was the ad that turned out to be just below ours in the New Times.

Well, to each his own. Now you know why we laughed so hard when Pastor Dale said in his talk that we accept people with wide open arms, just as they are, though we prefer that they come clothed. We kept a copy of the ad as a memento of our first service.

We placed a new ad in the Tribune that should run every Saturday, so people who aren't Internet savvy will know where we're meeting. Keep your eye out for the new ad. There's no telling what might be under it.

First Service in SLO

Our first service was wonderful. It was held held at the Veterans Memorial Hall in San Luis Obispo at 10:00 AM September 11, 2005. ( 9 / 11 ) The lunch following was positively delicious. We are so grateful for the wonderful support of our home church in Bakersfield. With gas prices the highest ever, they filled the parking lot. They brought food, equipment and great fellowship. THANK YOU. We could never have done this without your generous support. It was with sadness that we watched so many of you drive back to the Valley. We will keep you in our hearts.
